| Drive a little less than an hour south from Columbus on
US Rt. 62 or take US Rt. 35 east from Dayton; or from Cincinnati, you'll
travel slightly over an hour north on US Rt. 22 and you'll enter Union
Township in Fayette County. Union Township surrounds the City of Washington and
adjoins seven other townships in Fayette County.
Union Township, like most of Ohio, has been continuously inhabited for the last 12 or 13 thousand years as attested to by the many prehistoric artifacts that are commonly found. The first European settlers arrived around 1800. At that time this area was part of the Virginia Military District. Many of the first settlers were given land for service in the Revolutionary war. Today with a population of over 4000 and more than 125 businesses of various types the township is a transition between the city and the rural with suburban areas intermixed with farms. |
